The remains of the six-month-old female mammoth were discovered in a remarkable state of preservation on the Yamal peninsula, Russia.
It is the most complete one discovered up to now.
Experts believe the animal died 10,000 years ago.
The 130cm tall, 50kg Siberian specimen dates to the end of the last Ice Age, when the great beasts were vanishing from the planet.
The animal’s trunk and eyes are still intact and some of its fur remains on the body.
Some scientists hope its well-preserved DNA could be used to resurrect the mammoth and are optimistic about the potential for cloning.
Currently the group of international experts is examining the mammoth, and till the end of the year it will be taken to Jikei University in Tokyo, Japan for more detailed examination.
